Cleanliness and Healthy Habits: Promoting Hand Hygiene in Schools

JUNE 24, 2024

In 2016, the Department of Education issued DEPED Order No. 10, the "Policy and Guidelines on the Comprehensive Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene in Schools (WINS) Program." This directive aimed to improve access to adequate water supply, functional toilets, and effective hygiene promotion in schools, recognizing the vital importance of WASH in supporting the learning outcomes of children.

Proper handwashing plays a crucial role in preventing the spread of germs, such as bacteria and viruses, that can cause gastrointestinal and respiratory infections. These infections can pose serious complications, especially for young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

A year ago, a proposal to install a handwashing facility was approved and implemented, with Bagong Buhay Elementary School in Barangay Bagong Buhay, Cabanatuan City, being the chosen beneficiary. On May 10, 2024, M Lhuillier’s OPEC NEL Team headed to the school to unveil the new handwashing area.

As simple as it may seem, proper handwashing remains one of the most effective ways to remove germs and harmful bacteria from our hands. There are many easy-to-follow methods, including the use of sufficient soap and water or good alcohol-based sanitizers when water is not readily accessible.

The school principal expressed heartfelt gratitude for being selected as the recipient of this valuable resource, recognizing the positive impact it will have on the students' health and well-being. The students themselves showcased their joy and appreciation through a traditional "katutubo" dance performance.

The team was overwhelmed with emotion to witness the smiles and excitement on the faces of the students, as they realized the significance of this initiative in promoting cleanliness and healthy habits within the school community.

By collaborating with educational institutions like Bagong Buhay Elementary School, M Lhuillier plays a vital role in fostering a culture of hygiene and sanitation, ultimately contributing to the overall health and development of the next generation.
