Health Begins at School: ML Cares Supports Young Learners

ML Cares donates a handwashing facility to Alumbrado Elementary School, promoting hygiene, healthier students, and a safer learning environment.
A healthy learning environment begins with simple habits that protect students every day. One of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of illness is proper handwashing, allowing children to stay healthy, attend classes regularly, and focus on learning. Recognizing the importance of hygiene in schools, ML Cares, through OPEC La Lagoon, donated a handwashing facility to Alumbrado Elementary School during the school's Brigada Eskwela kickoff on June 1, 2026. More than providing a new school facility, the initiative reflects ML Cares' continuing commitment to supporting education, improving student well-being, and helping build healthier communities.
Proper sanitation plays an essential role in creating a safe and productive learning environment. Every school day brings opportunities for students to learn, interact, and explore, but it also increases the risk of spreading common illnesses when hygiene facilities are limited. By installing a dedicated handwashing station, ML Cares helps encourage regular handwashing before meals, after using the restroom, and throughout the school day. This simple yet meaningful addition promotes healthy habits while reinforcing the importance of cleanliness among young learners.
The handwashing facility was officially turned over during Alumbrado Elementary School's Brigada Eskwela 2026 kickoff, an annual program that brings together teachers, parents, volunteers, local organizations, and private partners to prepare schools for the opening of classes. School officials warmly welcomed the donation and expressed their appreciation to M Lhuillier and OPEC La Lagoon for supporting initiatives that directly benefit both learners and educators. As part of the activity, students and teachers also participated in a brief orientation on the proper use and maintenance of the facility, highlighting the importance of practicing good hygiene both inside and outside the classroom.
Beyond improving sanitation, the project offers long-term benefits for the entire school community. Easy access to proper handwashing helps reduce absenteeism caused by preventable illnesses, allowing students to spend more time learning and participating in classroom activities. A cleaner school environment also supports teachers in promoting healthy routines that students can carry into their homes, encouraging families to practice proper hygiene and helping create healthier communities beyond the school grounds.
The donation of the handwashing facility demonstrates how meaningful community partnerships can make a lasting difference in the lives of students. Through this initiative, ML Cares and OPEC La Lagoon continue to invest in projects that strengthen education, improve public health, and promote community development. As learners begin another school year in a cleaner and safer environment, the new facility serves as a daily reminder that every child deserves the opportunity to learn in a school that supports both their education and overall well-being.
